Update to the Renaming of Former Wingate Hall

July 9, 2021

Dear Wake Forest community,

On May 26, Dr. Nathan Hatch appointed us to co-chair an advisory committee to clarify the objectives in selecting a name for the former Wingate Hall and understand the concerns, reactions and suggestions regarding a new name. After multiple deliberations and meetings together over the course of the last few weeks, the committee — made up of individuals representing students, faculty, staff, alumni, administrators and Trustees — has completed its work to help advise the president regarding potential next steps.

Yesterday, the committee met with President Susan Wente to discuss our work and share an update on our efforts. We had a productive conversation, and we appreciate her active interest and listening. We anticipate Dr. Wente will update the community directly as she thoughtfully considers our input and all the work to date.

As co-chairs of the advisory committee, we are grateful for the engagement of the community in the important and ongoing work of reconciling our past, living in the present and holding great aspirations for our future. Thank you for your dedication to making Wake Forest a welcoming place.

Sincerely,

Hon. Donna Edwards (’80), University Trustee
José Villalba, Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion
